About the role
Role overview
The Chief of Staff & Director of Special Projects is a high-leverage, high-trust role supporting the CEO as a closest thought partner and force multiplier. You’ll run the CEO’s office, own executive communications and marketing, serve as a proxy in high-stakes relationships, and lead ambiguous special projects that don’t fit neatly into existing teams.
Responsibilities
Office of the CEO (Management)
- Coordinate the CEO’s focus and priorities in line with organizational needs
- Support strategic external communications: triage inbound messages, draft responses, and ensure timely follow-up
- Field and triage meeting requests for the CEO; take meetings independently when appropriate and prepare materials for high-stakes engagements
- Act as a proxy for the CEO in decision-making and follow-ups; own next steps so nothing falls through the cracks
- Partner with the CEO’s EA on scheduling, travel, expenses, and inbox management to maximize relationship-building
Communications & Marketing
- Lead and own executive communications for the CEO
- Develop and steward thought leadership content across Substack, LinkedIn, and other channels; also support the organization’s podcast
- Own CEO/executive media relations; coordinate with the Comms Lead on journalist responses and proactive engagement
- Support development of presentations and workshop facilitation materials so the CEO is prepared and polished
Special projects
- Lead ambiguous, cross-functional special projects that span multiple stakeholders/teams
- Move from half-formed ideas to shipped outcomes without waiting for step-by-step direction
Requirements
- Strong judgment and discretion for sensitive situations
- Ability to work effectively with ambiguity and drive outcomes independently
- Excellent written communication with the ability to write in another leader’s voice
- Comfort operating in a remote environment and working on a flexible schedule
- Ability to travel up to 40% within the U.S.
