About the role

Role Overview

Chief of Staff & Director of Special Projects for the CEO of a mission-driven 501(c)(3) non-profit. This is a high-leverage, high-trust role designed to be the CEO’s closest thought partner and force multiplier—sharpening the CEO’s voice, extending their reach, and owning key work across the organization.

Responsibilities

Office of the CEO / Management

  • Run the CEO’s office: coordinate the CEO’s focus and priorities aligned with organizational needs
  • Provide strategic external communications support (triage inbound communications, draft responses, ensure timely follow-up)
  • Field and triage meeting requests; take meetings independently where appropriate; prepare briefings and materials for high-stakes engagements
  • Act as a proxy for the CEO in decision-making and follow-ups; own next steps and ensure nothing falls through the cracks
  • Partner with the CEO’s EA on scheduling, travel, expenses, and inbox management; optimize travel time for relationship-building across partners, program teams, and funders

Communications & Marketing

  • Lead and own executive communications for the CEO
  • Develop and steward thought leadership content via Substack, LinkedIn, and other channels
  • Lead and own the organization’s podcast
  • Own CEO/executive media relations and coordinate with relevant stakeholders (content, interviews, and coverage)

Special Projects

  • Lead ambiguous, high-impact special projects that don’t fit neatly within a single team
  • Move from half-formed ideas to shipped results with comfort in ambiguity

Requirements

  • Strong communicator who can write with range and precision, including the ability to write in another leader’s voice
  • Excellent judgment and discretion for sensitive situations
  • Ability to read people, rooms, and stakeholders accurately
  • Comfortable operating in ambiguity and driving outcomes end-to-end
  • Ability to work remotely efficiently

Preferred / Practical Notes

  • Flexible remote schedule across the U.S.; preference for PST hours
  • Up to 40% travel within the U.S.
  • Start as soon as possible after offer (with some flexibility)

Compensation & Benefits

  • $150,000–$175,000 baseline depending on experience
  • Comprehensive benefits: health/dental/vision, life insurance, short- and long-term disability, flexible work hours/location, flexible PTO, paid parental leave
  • Annual stipend for home office expenses and professional development
  • 401k match of 4% vested immediately
