Chief of Staff, Director of Legal Operations

Role Overview

Chief of Staff, Director of Legal Operations, reporting to the Chief Legal Officer (CLO). This is a central leadership role within the Office of the CLO, acting as a force multiplier through operational direction, planning, performance measurement, and cross-functional execution.

Responsibilities

Strategic Partnering (Chief of Staff)

• Partner with the CLO and leadership team to define and execute long-term strategy.
• Own operational planning cycles, including:
  • OKR process
  • Roadmap development
  • Cross-functional coordination to ensure alignment and progress.

Legal Operations Leadership

• Lead and develop the Legal Operations function, including direct management of the team.
• Own the global Legal budget, forecasting, and accruals.
• Lead strategy for legal vendors (outside counsel, legal tech, e-billing) with a focus on data-driven performance and spend optimization.
• Maintain and evolve the Legal tech stack (CLM, e-billing, litigation tools).
• Design streamlined intake and triage systems for cross-functional partners.

Reporting and Performance

• Design and own an organizational performance tracking framework.
• Build automated dashboards and real-time progress views.
• Use AI to synthesize inputs across practice areas into actionable updates for the CLO and executive leadership.

Cross-Functional Integration

• Serve as strategic liaison between the CLO organization and Finance, Go-to-Market, Customer Success, Product, Engineering, and Marketing.
• Ensure CLO departments are integrated into business decisions early.
• Lead or support critical cross-functional initiatives (including post-acquisition integration when needed).

AI and Operational Tooling

• Identify and implement AI tools/workflows across the organization.
• Establish a continuous practice of automation and intelligent tooling to reduce friction and improve operational quality—especially within the Legal function via the Legal Ops roadmap.

Success Metrics

• Quality and velocity of CLO-level decision-making (time-to-alignment and time-to-action).
• Stakeholder confidence in CLO communication and execution.
• Legal Ops health: budget accuracy, vendor performance, tech stack utilization, and AI transformation progress.
• Reduction in coordination breakdowns across CLO functions.
• Adoption of shared planning/reporting/accountability standards across CLO-led functions.
