Chief of Staff, Director of Legal Operations

Role Overview

Chief of Staff, Director of Legal Operations within the Office of the Chief Legal Officer (CLO). This central leadership role reports directly to the CLO, drives Legal Operations across a global team, and acts as a force multiplier across Legal, Corporate Development, and the IT/AI-enabled operating infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

Chief of Staff (Strategic Partnership)

• Partner with the CLO and leadership team to define and execute long-term operational strategy.
• Own operational planning cycles, including:
  • OKR processes
  • Roadmap development
  • Cross-functional coordination to ensure alignment and progress.

Legal Operations Leadership

• Lead and develop the Legal Operations function and manage the team.
• Own and manage the global Legal budget, including forecasting and accruals.
• Lead strategy for Legal vendors (outside counsel, legal tech, e-billing) with data-driven performance and spend optimization.
• Maintain and evolve the Legal tech stack (CLM, e-billing, litigation tools).
• Design and streamline legal intake and triage systems for cross-functional partners.

Reporting and Performance

• Design and own the framework for tracking organizational performance.
• Build automated dashboards and real-time progress views.
• Use AI to synthesize inputs across practice areas into actionable updates for the CLO and executive leadership.

Cross-Functional Integration

• Serve as strategic liaison between the CLO organization and Finance, Go-to-Market, Customer Success, Product, Engineering, and Marketing.
• Ensure CLO departments are integrated into business decisions early (not after-the-fact).
• Support and drive key initiatives, including post-acquisition integration when needed.

AI and Operational Tooling

• Continuously identify and implement AI tools and workflows.
• Establish an ongoing practice of exploring automation/intelligent tooling to reduce friction and improve operational quality—especially within Legal Operations.

Success Measures

• Quality and velocity of CLO decision-making (time-to-alignment and time-to-action).
• Stakeholder confidence in clear communication and consistent execution.
• Legal Ops health: budget accuracy, vendor performance, tech stack utilization, and AI transformation.
• Reduced coordination breakdowns across CLO functions.
• Adoption of shared planning, reporting, and accountability standards.
