About the role
Role Overview
Backstage Developer (Contract) to design, develop, and maintain developer portal solutions using Backstage, the open-source Internal Developer Platform (IDP). You will build integrations and automation that improve developer experience and enable scalable platform self-service.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and customize Backstage-based internal developer portals
- Build and maintain custom Backstage plugins, components, and integrations
- Integrate Backstage with enterprise tools including:
- GitHub/GitLab, Jenkins, Azure DevOps, Jira, ServiceNow
- Kubernetes and cloud platforms
- Create software templates and scaffolding to automate onboarding and deployments
- Implement service catalog management and component discovery
- Develop APIs and backend services for Backstage integrations
- Partner with DevOps / Platform Engineering / Cloud / Security / Development teams to improve productivity and self-service
- Configure authentication & authorization using SSO, OAuth, LDAP, or SAML
- Ensure security, scalability, and performance of the platform
- Automate infrastructure and deployment workflows using CI/CD pipelines
- Troubleshoot platform and integration issues
- Produce documentation, standards, and best practices for adoption
Required Skills
- Strong experience with Backstage Developer Portal
- TypeScript and JavaScript
- Node.js and React for modern frontend development
- Understanding of REST APIs and microservices architecture
- Experience with Kubernetes and Docker/containerized environments
- CI/CD experience with Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or Azure DevOps
- Source control: GitHub/GitLab/Bitbucket
- Cloud familiarity: AWS, Azure, or GCP
- Infrastructure as Code: Terraform or CloudFormation
- Auth protocols: OAuth2, OpenID Connect, SAML, LDAP
Preferred Skills
- Platform Engineering and Internal Developer Platforms (IDP)
- Service catalog and software lifecycle management
- Observability integration (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, Splunk)
- DevSecOps and security automation
- Experience in Agile/Scrum environments
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in CS/IT/Engineering or related field
- 4–8+ years software development experience
- 2+ years hands-on Backstage platform development/customization
- Experience delivering enterprise-scale developer experience and platform solutions
