Backend Software Engineer specializing in APIs & distributed systems. Remote (United States). Hourly contract role for 10–40 hours/week.

Responsibilities

Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services and APIs
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate business needs into technical solutions
Optimize backend systems for reliability, security, and performance
Write clean, well-documented, thoroughly tested code following best practices
Participate in code reviews, mentoring, and technical knowledge sharing
Monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve production backend issues
Contribute to system architecture discussions and ongoing infrastructure improvements

Requirements

Strong backend development experience using modern programming languages
Experience designing and implementing RESTful APIs and microservices architectures
Strong knowledge of relational and NoSQL databases and data modeling
Understanding of authentication, authorization, and backend security best practices
Experience with cloud platforms: AWS, GCP, or Azure
Familiarity with Docker and Kubernetes
Excellent written and verbal communication in a remote environment
