About the role

Role Overview

Join a remote team supporting a high-visibility federal modernization program. You’ll build and operate cloud-native backend systems, modernize legacy infrastructure, and work across cross-functional engineering teams.

Responsibilities

Develop, modify, and maintain backend applications and internal utilities
Build and maintain cloud-native microservices with scalability and reliability in mind
Operate and monitor enterprise production systems, troubleshooting and resolving issues
Translate user needs into robust software solutions aligned with organizational goals
Design and develop databases in collaboration with the team
Apply distributed systems design principles throughout project development
Participate in code reviews, pair programming, and mentoring junior developers
Collaborate with DevOps, QA, Security, and Architecture to ensure smooth integration and deployment
Support migration efforts from legacy mainframe systems to cloud environments (e.g., AWS GovCloud)
Implement investigative search capabilities using Elasticsearch (or similar)
Build microservices using OpenShift container platforms and scalable cloud-native patterns
Integrate with event-driven architectures and high-throughput data processing systems

Requirements

Junior level: Bachelor’s with 3+ years relevant experience OR Associate’s with 5+ years
Strong proficiency in Java and object-oriented programming
Experience building microservices, REST APIs, and cloud-native applications
Hands-on with Kubernetes, containerization, and automated deployment tools
Proficiency designing/operating solutions on AWS (or other cloud platforms)
Familiarity with event-driven architectures (e.g., Apache Kafka and event streaming patterns)
Knowledge of GitOps practices and tools such as GitLab/GitHub/Bitbucket and ArgoCD
Experience working in Agile frameworks (Scrum or SAFe)
Familiar with Atlassian tools like Jira and Confluence

Security / Logistics

Requires a minimum Secret security clearance
Remote work with occasional travel as needed

Nice-to-Haves / Additional Signals

Experience with AWS GovCloud, Elasticsearch, OpenShift, and high-throughput event processing
