About the role

Role Overview

Junior-level Backend Software Developer for a high-visibility federal modernization initiative. This remote role supports mission-critical government IT systems, transforming legacy platforms into modern cloud-native solutions.

Responsibilities

Develop, modify, and maintain enterprise applications and specialized utility programs
Build microservices and REST-style services in a cloud-native environment (primarily AWS GovCloud and OpenShift)
Operate and support production systems, ensuring high availability and reliability
Troubleshoot and resolve system issues to minimize downtime
Design and implement solutions based on user needs and mission goals
Design and develop databases in collaboration with teams to optimize performance and security
Participate in code reviews, pair programming, and mentoring junior developers
Collaborate with cross-functional teams (DevOps, QA, Security, Architecture)
Support migration efforts from legacy mainframe systems to cloud-based environments
Enhance investigative search capabilities (including work involving Elasticsearch)
Participate in on-call support rotations

Requirements

At least a Secret Security Clearance
Bachelor’s degree with 3+ years relevant experience OR Associate’s degree with 5+ years relevant experience
Strong proficiency in Java and object-oriented programming
Experience developing microservices, REST APIs, and cloud-native applications
Hands-on experience with Kubernetes, containerization, and automated deployment tools
Proficiency designing, developing, and operating solutions on AWS (or other cloud platforms)
Experience with event-driven architectures (e.g., Apache Kafka and event streaming/patterns)
Familiarity with GitOps using GitLab/GitHub/Bitbucket and ArgoCD
Experience with Agile methodologies (Scrum and SAFe)
Atlassian tools experience (Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket)
Strong troubleshooting and system analysis skills
Excellent collaboration and communication

Nice to Haves / Technical Context

Exposure to AWS GovCloud, OpenShift, and Elasticsearch
Event sourcing or Pub/Sub-style patterns
