About the role
Role Overview
Join a fully remote team supporting a high-visibility federal modernization program as a Junior Backend Software Developer. You’ll build and operate microservices that modernize legacy platforms, improve security, and enhance operational efficiency across mission-critical government IT systems.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain enterprise software and utility programs to meet project requirements
- Design, build, and operate cloud-native microservices (primarily AWS GovCloud)
- Operate production systems to ensure high availability and performance
- Troubleshoot and resolve system issues to minimize downtime
- Analyze user/mission needs and deliver solutions aligned with organizational objectives
- Design and develop databases in collaboration with team members
- Apply computer science/engineering principles for system design and optimization
- Participate in code reviews, pair programming, and mentoring of junior developers
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (DevOps, QA, Security, Product, Architecture)
- Support migration of legacy (mainframe) systems to cloud environments
- Implement search capabilities using Elasticsearch (or similar)
- Build scalable microservices on OpenShift container platforms
- Support broader full-stack integration efforts, including UI integration using modern JavaScript frameworks
Requirements
- Active Tier 3 Secret Security Clearance (or higher); minimum Secret Security Clearance required
- Bachelor’s degree with 3+ years relevant experience, or Associate’s degree with 5+ years relevant experience
- Java and strong object-oriented programming fundamentals
- Hands-on experience with microservices, REST APIs, and cloud-native applications
- Kubernetes and containerization; experience with automated deployment tools
- Experience designing and operating solutions within AWS (or other cloud platforms)
- Knowledge of event-driven architectures (e.g., Apache Kafka, Pub/Sub patterns, streaming, or event sourcing)
- Experience with GitOps using tools such as GitLab/GitHub/Bitbucket and ArgoCD
- Familiarity with Agile practices (Scrum and/or SAFe ceremonies)
- Proficiency with Atlassian tools (e.g., Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket)
Nice-to-haves / Additional Context
- Experience supporting migrations from mainframes to cloud
- Familiarity with law-enforcement oriented search/analytics workflows (via Elasticsearch-like solutions)
