About the role

Role Overview

Junior Backend Software Developer supporting a high-visibility federal modernization program. This is a fully remote role working on cloud-native modernization of legacy platforms and microservices (primarily on AWS GovCloud).

Responsibilities

Develop, create, and modify software applications and utility programs for mission-critical systems
Design and build microservices in a cloud-native environment (primarily AWS GovCloud and OpenShift)
Operate and monitor enterprise-scale production systems, troubleshoot, and resolve issues promptly
Gather/analyze user needs and build robust solutions aligned to mission objectives
Design, develop, and maintain databases supporting application domains
Apply distributed systems and engineering principles to create scalable solutions
Participate in code reviews, pair programming, and mentor junior developers
Collaborate with DevOps, QA, Security, Product, and Architecture for seamless integration and deployment
Support migration from legacy mainframe systems to cloud, including investigative search capabilities migrating to Elasticsearch (or similar)
Implement and deploy new microservices using scalable cloud-native patterns and best practices
Build full-stack components that support UI integration layers using modern JavaScript frameworks (where applicable)

Requirements

Active Tier 3 Secret Security Clearance (or higher)
3+ years relevant experience with a Bachelor’s degree, or 5+ years with an Associate’s degree
Strong foundation in Java and OOP principles
Experience developing microservices and REST APIs
Hands-on experience with Kubernetes, containerization, and automated deployment pipelines
Familiarity with AWS (or other cloud platforms) including designing, deploying, and operating cloud solutions
Experience with event-driven architectures (e.g., Apache Kafka and/or Pub/Sub patterns/streaming)
Knowledge of GitOps practices using tools such as GitLab/GitHub/Bitbucket and ArgoCD
Experience working in Agile frameworks (e.g., Scrum or SAFe)
Familiarity with Atlassian tools such as Jira and Confluence

Nice-to-haves / Context

Experience with AWS GovCloud and/or government IT modernization programs
Experience supporting migrations from mainframe systems to cloud
