About the role

Role Overview

Backend Java Engineer for a remote contract (6 months) on an Email Security Platform team. You will build and maintain services for ingesting, processing, scanning, and routing enterprise email for security analysis at scale.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain backend services using Java and Spring Boot
  • Implement features, enhancements, and defect fixes in distributed backend applications
  • Build and maintain automated unit and integration tests
  • Participate in code reviews and technical design discussions
  • Support database schema updates and data migrations
  • Investigate and troubleshoot production issues related to application behavior and data processing
  • Collaborate with technical and business stakeholders to resolve pipeline issues
  • Contribute to reliability, scalability, and performance of backend services

Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional backend development experience in Java
  • Strong experience with Spring Framework / Spring Boot
  • Experience with distributed or event-driven systems, including messaging/event streaming (e.g., Kafka)
  • Experience building RESTful APIs and backend services
  • Strong automated testing experience (unit + integration, e.g., JUnit)
  • Relational databases and SQL, including schema changes/data migrations
  • Experience with Amazon S3
  • Hands-on experience with Agile development environments
  • Ability to troubleshoot production systems and resolve complex technical issues

Preferred Qualifications

  • Azure cloud-native development (including Azure Event Hub)
  • Additional messaging/event tools: RabbitMQ, JMS
  • Docker and Kubernetes (K8s)
  • PostgreSQL and Elasticsearch
  • Gradle build tools
  • OpenTelemetry (OTEL) for observability
  • Integration with Microsoft Graph API
  • Experience with CI/CD and modern DevOps practices
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude Code / OpenCode)
