Backend Engineer (Platform, Stacks)

Role overview

Backend Engineer on the AppCore Stacks squad at Grafana Labs. You will build and operate backend systems that create, configure, reconcile, migrate, and run Grafana Cloud stacks at scale. You’ll collaborate across teams to keep stack lifecycle workflows reliable, observable, and resilient, while improving operational efficiency and helping drive roadmap planning and technical design.

Key missions

• Design, build, and operate reconciliation systems to track desired stack state and detect/repair drift across stack templates.
• Collaborate across teams to ensure stack lifecycle workflows stay reliable, observable, and resilient.
• Manage rollout mechanisms for provisioned plugins, dashboards, data sources, Grafana versions, release channels, and stack-level configuration.

What you’ll be like (profile)

• Enjoy problems in stateful systems, eventual consistency, and reconciliation loops.
• Prefer building production systems where correctness, scalability, and operational clarity matter.
• Can break complex work into safe, iterative increments and communicate technical tradeoffs clearly.
• Comfortable with remote-first, asynchronous collaboration across time zones and owning critical Grafana Cloud systems.
• Can translate ambiguous lifecycle requirements into explicit, modular solutions.

Requirements

• Professional experience with Go (Golang) and willingness to work across backend services and application code.
• At least 1 year of fully remote work experience.
• Experience with a SaaS platform and familiarity with distributed systems concepts such as scalability, multi-tenancy, and high availability.
• Experience with production-quality, well-tested, maintainable software.
• Familiarity/experience with blameless incident response and contributing to post-incident reviews.
• Experience with Kubernetes control-plane patterns, operators/reconcilers, or desired-state systems.
• Willingness to collaborate across teams to align work with other squads and stakeholders.

Nice-to-haves

• Familiarity with Kubernetes in AWS, GCP, or Azure.
• Exposure to infrastructure-as-code tools such as Helm, Terraform, Jsonnet.
• Experience with TypeScript/Node.js.
• Experience contributing from brainstorming through shipping to customers.
• Care about developer and user experience.
• Interest in AI-assisted and agentic development practices and embedding agentic capabilities to reduce toil and improve reliability.
