Backend Engineer

Role Overview

Backend Engineer at Grafana Labs working on critical, cloud-native systems in a fully remote environment. You’ll help drive projects from idea to production, with a focus on reliability, performance, and availability.

Responsibilities

• Influence the team roadmap and align work with your career goals.
• Collaborate with your squad to deliver new features, iterate based on results, and improve continuously.
• Build, operate, and maintain critical systems with ownership of reliability, performance, and availability.
• Work effectively in a fully remote setup with strong communication and time management.
• Deliver projects end-to-end as part of a larger team (requirements gathering → ideation → shipping to customers).
• Contribute to operational readiness, including on-call and following the DevOps model.
• Use observability tooling (metrics, logs, traces) to debug production issues.

Requirements

• Bias toward action; motivated self-starter with customer focus.
• Ability to write clean, robust, performant code that others can maintain.
• Some experience developing software for the cloud or with systems engineering.
• Experience using LLMs for everyday coding tasks and reading/extending codebases.
• At least one programming language; Go is used, and Python/C/C++/Rust or similar experience transfers.
• Experience working with Kubernetes.
• Experience with queue systems (e.g., Kafka protocol).
• Familiarity with observability systems and when to use metrics/logs/traces.
• Experience with project delivery as part of a larger team.
• Familiarity with infrastructure as code.

Nice to Have

• Been a user of Grafana and Prometheus in operational roles (including on-call).
• Exposure to microservices and distributed systems, or desire to learn.
• Experience using Grafana/Prometheus via work or homelab projects.
