About the role

Role Overview

Backend Engineer (Elixir) to help build and evolve the Chromatic Platform API powering the web app, CLI, internal services, and Storybook add-ons.

Responsibilities

Build and maintain scalable, reliable backend systems for the Chromatic product.
Own projects end-to-end: break down features into tasks and maintain delivery momentum.
Collaborate cross-functionally to ensure continuity between Chromatic and Storybook and ship developer-friendly improvements.
Continuously optimize, refactor, and modernize existing systems.
Participate in a support rotation (primarily within business hours).
Stay current with emerging trends in frontend architecture and developer tooling to enhance the platform.

Requirements

5+ years hands-on backend engineering experience building scalable, resilient APIs/systems.
Strong experience with Elixir and TypeScript.
Test-driven approach.
Ability to scope work, communicate progress clearly, flag blockers early, and make technical/product trade-offs with stakeholder alignment.
Strong written and verbal communication in a distributed/asynchronous environment.
Self-directed, accountable execution and consistent progress delivery.
Strong focus on developer experience.

Nice to Haves

Experience with Storybook or Chromatic.
Experience building and maintaining a public API.
