About the role
Role Overview
Remote Back-End Java Developer (contract) to build a new cloud-native application that computes taxes and generates tax returns for clients.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and implement backend features for a cloud-native tax computation application using Java and Python
- Collaborate with product owners, analysts, and other stakeholders to translate requirements into technical solutions
- Build and maintain RESTful web services
- Manage database schemas and optimize queries for MongoDB and relational databases
- Participate in code reviews, testing, and documentation to ensure quality and maintainability
- Improve development processes by automating build, test, and deployment activities
- Troubleshoot and resolve production issues
- Work actively in an Agile/Scrum team (sprint planning, stand-ups, retrospectives)
Requirements
- 5+ years of professional software development experience, specifically Java/J2EE and Python
- Strong REST API design and implementation experience
- Experience with MongoDB and relational SQL databases
- Familiarity with web services (REST, possibly SOAP)
- Proficiency with build tools such as Gradle
- Hands-on experience with messaging systems such as RabbitMQ and Kafka
- Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines (builds, testing, deployment)
- Working knowledge of Agile principles and Scrum teams
Nice to Haves
- Experience with containerization/orchestration: Docker and OpenShift
