Backend / API Engineer, Billing

Role Overview

Backend / API Engineer (Billing) on Stripe’s Revenue and Financial Automation (RFA) team. You’ll design and build API and backend services for subscription and billing products used by businesses worldwide.

Responsibilities

• Design and deliver next-generation Stripe Billing products for long-term growth.
• Collaborate with cross-functional experts (infrastructure, security, design, operations) to ship mission-critical internal and external features.
• Debug and resolve critical production issues across services and multiple layers of the stack.
• Mentor engineers and help them grow.
• Deliver value through a users-first, stakeholder-collaborative approach.

Requirements

• 2–12+ years of backend software development experience.
• Strong ability to write high-quality code (e.g., Go, Java, C/C++).
• Hands-on experience building or contributing to large-scale distributed systems.
• Excellent collaboration skills across workstreams.
• Comfortable working with high autonomy and ownership.

Preferred Qualifications

• Familiarity with event-driven architectures.
• Experience with subscription management, usage-based billing, or financial reporting systems.
• Interest in financial infrastructure and revenue operations.
• Direct leadership and mentorship experience.

Work Location

• Hybrid: office-based or remote (remote must be 35+ miles / 56+ km from a Stripe office).
• In-office employees are expected to spend at least 50% of time in the local office.
• Remote employees are expected to work regularly from home, with occasional office visits for meetings and events.
