Back End Developer (AI Infrastructure)

Role Overview

Build and optimize the server-side infrastructure and APIs that power AI products at scale. This is a fully remote, flexible contract role (10–40 hours/week) focused on backend services, data pipelines, and model-serving workloads.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain backend services, APIs, and data pipelines
• Build scalable, high-performance server architecture for AI training and inference
• Write clean, well-documented, testable code and follow engineering best practices
• Integrate with databases, message queues, cloud services, and third-party APIs
• Optimize performance, reliability, and scalability as usage grows
• Troubleshoot production issues, perform code reviews, and help drive architectural decisions
• Collaborate asynchronously with distributed engineering, research, and product teams
• Work independently on task- and project-based assignments

Requirements

• Proficiency in one or more backend languages: Python, Go, Java, Node.js, or Rust (or similar)
• Solid understanding of RESTful API design, microservices, and distributed systems
• Experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis)
• Comfortable with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure)
• Experience with Git, CI/CD, and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes)
• Strong debugging and problem-solving skills
• Ability to work asynchronously and communicate/document decisions effectively

Nice to Have

• Experience building ML/AI infrastructure
• Familiarity with data processing frameworks (Kafka, Spark, Airflow, etc.)
• Performance optimization, caching, and high-throughput systems
• Knowledge of authentication/authorization and security best practices
• Experience with serverless or event-driven architectures
• Open-source contributions or a strong portfolio
