Associate Software Engineer (Java)

Role Overview

Associate Software Engineer (Backend) joining Sage Bionetworks’ technology team to build secure, scalable, high-performance services for open and collaborative science.

Key Responsibilities

• Software Development: Implement cutting-edge applications; primary language is Java (occasional use of other modern languages).
• Cloud Computing: Develop and support services running mainly on AWS (e.g., S3, EC2, CloudWatch; newer offerings such as Bedrock).
• Requirements Analysis: Analyze user requirements and translate them into robust, efficient solutions.
• Agile Collaboration: Work in an Agile process with scrums, scoping, backlog prioritization, and code reviews; collaborate with product managers and designers.
• DevOps / Production Support: Monitor system performance and address production issues (with no on-call outside business hours).
• Technical Documentation: Produce comprehensive technical documentation for users and developers.
• Productivity & AI Tools: Stay current on engineering productivity tools and AI/agent-based tooling trends.

Requirements

• Education: BS in Computer Science/Software Engineering (or related) or equivalent training.
• Experience: Some team-based software development experience delivering finished products.
• Programming: Solid Java; experience with at least one other modern language such as Python, TypeScript, or Node.js.
• Version Control: Experience with Git-based collaborative development.
• Process/Tools: Practical experience with software development lifecycles and Agile; tools for organizing/prioritizing work such as Jira.
• AI Tools: Experience with agentic code generation tools.
• Communication: Strong verbal, written, and organizational skills.
• Mindset: Curiosity to explore new tools/frameworks and contribute ideas.

Nice to Have

• Familiarity with Maven or other dependency/build tools.
• Familiarity with CI/CD tools such as GitHub Actions and AWS CodePipeline.
