Associate Data Engineer (Remote)

Role Overview

Associate Data Engineer to support the S&S Data Science team’s External Data function. You will build and maintain pipelines that ingest third-party data into underwriting, claims, and business intelligence workflows.

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain batch and streaming ETL/ELT pipelines feeding a cloud data warehouse
• Develop, schedule, and monitor cloud data jobs; diagnose failures and tune for cost and performance
• Write idempotent load logic to support reprocessing and backfills without duplicates
• Integrate external data providers/APIs with authentication, error handling, and retries
• Implement data quality checks, validation, and alerting
• Manage and deploy pipelines using infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD
• Support data migrations and service updates with minimal downtime
• Deliver clean, analytics/model-ready datasets for data scientists and analysts

Requirements

• 1–5+ years of professional experience in data engineering or a related software/data role
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/Data Engineering (or equivalent experience)
• Strong skills in Python and SQL
• Familiarity with ETL/ELT and building data pipelines
• Experience with at least one major cloud platform (AWS preferred)
• Familiarity with REST APIs and integrating external data sources
• Strong data quality and reliability mindset
• Ability to communicate clearly with both technical and business audiences

• AWS services: Glue, Lambda, S3
• Cloud data warehouse loading/modeling (e.g., Snowflake)
• Distributed processing (e.g., Apache Spark)
• Streaming technologies (Kafka or Kinesis)
• Infrastructure-as-code (e.g., CDK, Terraform, CloudFormation) and CloudWatch monitoring
• Geospatial analysis
• Zero-downtime deployment patterns (e.g., blue-green)
• Interest in insurance/underwriting/claims
