Assistant Corporate Controller

Role Overview

Assistant Corporate Controller at Owlet, reporting to the VP, Corporate Controller. This is a high-impact accounting leadership role focused on scaling financial operations for a high-growth public company. Depending on experience, the role may be leveled as Senior Manager or Director.

Responsibilities

Accounting Close

• Review journal entries for accuracy, completeness, and supporting documentation
• Provide final approval for journal entries
• Oversee preparation and review of account reconciliations
• Enforce standards for reconciliation procedures to ensure consistency and control
• Ensure strict adherence to GAAP, providing guidance on accounting standards

SEC Reporting

• Prepare and review SEC filings (e.g., 10-K, 10-Q, 8-K) for compliance
• Support disclosure footnotes for accuracy and SEC compliance
• Support the tie-out process between financial statements and footnotes
• Assist with and respond during the external audit process

Team Leadership

• Supervise, mentor, and guide the accounting team
• Conduct performance reviews and provide feedback
• Manage workload, prioritize tasks, and ensure deadline adherence
• Support recruitment and onboarding of new team members
• Maintain effective communication and collaboration across departments
• Address and resolve team conflicts professionally

Process Improvement & Technology

• Identify and recommend process improvements
• Standardize processes to improve efficiency
• Support and implement technology solutions and automation projects

Internal Controls & SOX

• Support remediation of control deficiencies
• Participate in Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) compliance activities, including SOX 404(b) readiness

Strategic Partnership

• Partner with business leaders to provide financial insights for strategic initiatives
• Build relationships with key stakeholders including investors, lenders, and board members

Requirements

• Proven experience in an accounting role, preferably in a public company environment
• Strong understanding of GAAP
