About the role
Role Overview
Merit is seeking a high-performing Assistant Controller for its headquarters accounting team, reporting to the Global Controller. The Assistant Controller serves as the primary accounting leader for an assigned portfolio of subsidiaries, ensuring the integrity, timeliness, and accuracy of financial reporting.
Responsibilities
Financial Close & Reporting
- Lead the monthly close for an assigned portfolio of subsidiaries, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting
- Review account reconciliations, journal entries, and supporting schedules prepared by staff and senior accountants
- Prepare/review complex reconciliations and technical accounting analyses as needed
- Review monthly results, investigate unusual trends/variances, and partner with portfolio leadership to resolve issues
- Provide ad hoc financial reporting and analysis to portfolio leadership and Merit management
Team Leadership & Development
- Coach, mentor, and train staff and senior accountants
- Improve accounting processes, documentation standards, and internal controls
- Promote accountability, precision, and continuous improvement
M&A Integration & Portfolio Support
- Assist with accounting integration for newly acquired portfolio companies, including:
- Aligning/updating chart of accounts
- Drafting revenue recognition memoranda
- Supporting purchase accounting and acquisition-date opening balances
- Integrating into Merit’s reporting structure and month-end close processes
- Partner with portfolio leadership on accounting/operational initiatives
- Support special projects related to acquisitions and post-acquisition integration
Audit & Compliance
- Assist the Global Controller with the annual consolidated audit
- Prepare audit schedules and supporting documentation for assigned subsidiaries
- Coordinate with external auditors to answer audit requests and inquiries for assigned subsidiaries
Requirements & Qualifications
- CPA with both public accounting and corporate experience
- Experience leading accounting close/reporting processes and ensuring accuracy/timeliness
- Ability to conduct technical accounting analysis (including areas like revenue recognition)
- Strong partnership skills with subsidiary/portfolio leadership teams
Nice-to-Haves
- Experience supporting M&A integration and acquisition accounting
- Experience building scalable accounting processes and internal control frameworks

- Remote position supporting a global portfolio of software companies (based in the United States).
