About the role

Role Overview

As an Applied AI Engineer at Cohere, you will design, build, and deploy AI workflows powered by Large Language Models (LLMs) for enterprise customers. You’ll collaborate with customers to address real-world business problems and work with internal teams to deliver scalable, production-ready, agentic AI systems.

Turn enterprise business workflows into scalable, production-ready agentic AI systems.
Define and apply evaluation and quality standards to measure success, failures, and regressions in AI systems.

Responsibilities / What You’ll Do

Design strong multi-step agent workflows (e.g., ReAct) with prompt engineering, tool use, and robust failure handling.
Balance trade-offs across customization vs reuse and across autonomy, control, cost, latency, and risk.
Build and optimize AI systems using RAG, agent workflows, evaluation, and performance optimization.
Lead technical discussions with customers/partners and help drive alignment on AI system requirements.

Requirements

3+ years building and shipping production software.
2+ years working with LLMs or AI APIs.
Strong programming skills in Python and/or JavaScript/TypeScript.
Hands-on experience with modern LLMs such as GPT, Claude, or Gemini.
Experience with vector databases.
Experience with agent/orchestration frameworks, e.g., LangChain, LangGraph, LlamaIndex, or custom solutions.
Practical experience with RAG, agent workflows, evaluation, and performance optimization.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including leading technical discussions.
Ability to travel up to 25%.
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field.

Nice to Have

Familiarity with human-in-the-loop workflows, fine-tuning, or LLM evaluation techniques.
Experience with cloud deployment and production operations for AI systems.
Background in applied ML, NLP, or decision systems.
Prior work delivering AI/automation solutions to enterprise customers.
Experience working in a fast-moving startup environment.
