About the role

Role Overview

Android Engineer (RFID) joining a mobile team to build and improve an RFID Android application for Zebra rugged devices. You’ll work hands-on with Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, integrate hardware SDKs, and ship secure, stable features into production—while learning to develop within DoD environments.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain the Android app for rugged Zebra handhelds
  • Develop in a multi-module codebase
  • Write clean, reliable Kotlin and Jetpack Compose that handles RFID, barcode, and sensor data
  • Implement offline-first features: local caching, offline data handling, and secure storage
  • Collaborate with backend (.NET) and frontend (Vue.js) teams to support seamless syncing and UX
  • Test, troubleshoot, and fix edge-case device issues seen in the field
  • Participate in code reviews, technical planning, and continuous quality improvements

Requirements

  • 2–5 years of experience building Android apps with Kotlin, coroutines, and flows
  • Strong understanding of Jetpack Compose (recomposition, stability, performance tuning)
  • Experience with Dagger Hilt for dependency injection
  • Experience with Android Room for offline-first architecture
  • Interest in hardware integrations (RFID, barcode scanning)
  • Strong debugging skills and attention to detail
  • Experience with unit, UI, and instrumentation testing for rugged hardware and critical edge-case environments
  • Willingness to learn cybersecurity, app hardening, and DoD deployment constraints
  • U.S. citizenship required and ability to obtain a Secret clearance

Nice to Haves

  • Modular architecture experience to optimize build times and improve scalability/library management
  • Experience with MDM device/profile management
  • Experience with Zebra handhelds or Zebra SDKs
  • Exposure to RMF/ATO, app hardening, and IL4/5 environments
  • Familiarity with RFID workflows or asset tracking use cases
  • Experience building secure, rugged mobile apps for industrial or defense settings

Location / Logistics

  • Remote (U.S.-based) with some travel required
