Android Engineer II

Role overview

Android Engineer II on Zello’s Android team. You’ll join a small four-person team and ship features that are visible to customers running the Android app.

Responsibilities

• Own and ship end-to-end features across a focused area of the Android client
• Write production Kotlin daily (use Java when working in legacy code)
• Treat tests, code review, and stability as part of “done”
• Contribute to Android 2.0 rearchitecture, including:
  • Hilt-based dependency injection
  • Modular Gradle and plugin patterns
  • MVVM/MVI architecture
• Use AI-native development workflows daily and contribute improvements back to the agent library
• Pair with teammates, review code, and align on shared standards

Requirements

• 2+ years shipping production Android apps in Kotlin
• Comfortable navigating legacy Java code
• Experience with modern Android architecture on real codebases, including DI, modular Gradle, and MVVM or MVI
• Strong “definition of done”: quality, tests, low crash impact, and clean code reviews
• Uses AI-assisted development as a default (not a novelty)
• Can take ownership of focused scope and ship without hand-holding
• Receives code review feedback well and iterates without ego

Nice-to-haves / signals of impact

• Demonstrated contribution to Android 2.0 (e.g., Hilt migration, plugin migration, new components)
• Measurable quality outcomes such as reduced crash rate, fixed top customer-impact bugs, or stability/performance improvements
