About the role
Role Overview
Ampa is seeking an Android Engineer (Android / Java / Kotlin) to own development of its clinical Android tablet application, the primary interface between clinicians and the TMS medical device. You’ll build high-quality Android UI and ensure reliable, secure integration with backend systems and proprietary hardware, including real-time telemetry and strict clinical data integrity.
Responsibilities
- Hardware Integration: Maintain and optimize USB Serial (RS232/USB) communication between the Android tablet and TMS hardware.
- Native Bridge Development: Build and maintain high-performance bridges (Java/C++ to TypeScript) for high-frequency telemetry (heartbeats, sensor data, pulse logs).
- Lifecycle & State Management: Manage complex app state with Redux Toolkit, ensuring consistent medical treatment data across disconnects and backgrounding.
- Binary Protocol Engineering: Implement/customize and debug binary protocols (packet encoding/decoding, checksum validation, serial command queuing).
- Safety & Error Handling: Create robust Safety Interlock logic to detect hardware faults (e.g., overvoltage/overheating) and trigger immediate software shutdowns.
- Medical Data Integrity: Collect, synchronize, and securely transmit clinical session data to AWS via secure REST APIs.
- Engineering Leadership: Help establish Android coding standards, mentor junior engineers, and perform code reviews.
- Cross-platform Collaboration: Work with React/React Native engineers on the broader platform.
Required Technical Skills
- React Native 0.75+ and TypeScript (expert level)
- Java (Android native) and TypeScript/JavaScript
- Redux Toolkit (Slices, Async Thunks, Middleware)
- Experience with USB/Serial communication (UART/low-level protocols)
- Binary data handling: ArrayBuffer, Uint8Array, hex conversions, bitwise operations
- Deep understanding of React Native Bridge and/or JSI
- Networking/security: Axios, JWT authentication, TLS
- Android hardware integration experience: UVC cameras, gyroscope, accelerometer
