About the role

Role Overview

Ampa is seeking an Android Engineer (Android / Java / Kotlin) to own development of its clinical Android tablet application, the primary interface between clinicians and the TMS medical device. You’ll build high-quality Android UI and ensure reliable, secure integration with backend systems and proprietary hardware, including real-time telemetry and strict clinical data integrity.

Responsibilities

  • Hardware Integration: Maintain and optimize USB Serial (RS232/USB) communication between the Android tablet and TMS hardware.
  • Native Bridge Development: Build and maintain high-performance bridges (Java/C++ to TypeScript) for high-frequency telemetry (heartbeats, sensor data, pulse logs).
  • Lifecycle & State Management: Manage complex app state with Redux Toolkit, ensuring consistent medical treatment data across disconnects and backgrounding.
  • Binary Protocol Engineering: Implement/customize and debug binary protocols (packet encoding/decoding, checksum validation, serial command queuing).
  • Safety & Error Handling: Create robust Safety Interlock logic to detect hardware faults (e.g., overvoltage/overheating) and trigger immediate software shutdowns.
  • Medical Data Integrity: Collect, synchronize, and securely transmit clinical session data to AWS via secure REST APIs.
  • Engineering Leadership: Help establish Android coding standards, mentor junior engineers, and perform code reviews.
  • Cross-platform Collaboration: Work with React/React Native engineers on the broader platform.

Required Technical Skills

  • React Native 0.75+ and TypeScript (expert level)
  • Java (Android native) and TypeScript/JavaScript
  • Redux Toolkit (Slices, Async Thunks, Middleware)
  • Experience with USB/Serial communication (UART/low-level protocols)
  • Binary data handling: ArrayBuffer, Uint8Array, hex conversions, bitwise operations
  • Deep understanding of React Native Bridge and/or JSI
  • Networking/security: Axios, JWT authentication, TLS
  • Android hardware integration experience: UVC cameras, gyroscope, accelerometer

Nice-to-Have / Fit

  • Mission-driven and passionate about treating depression
  • Resilient and adaptable in a high-intensity, fast-changing environment
  • UX-obsessed, detail-oriented, able to build reliable experiences in high-stakes clinical settings

Experience

  • 5+ years of experience building Android applications (posting cut off after “5+ years of experience building p”)
