About the role

Role Overview

AI & Data Scientist (Remote) at Alignment Health. You will build production-grade AI/ML solutions on the company’s proprietary clinical intelligence platform (AVA), supporting risk adjustment strategy for Medicare Advantage. The work combines end-to-end data science (from problem framing to model delivery) with software engineering to deploy reliable services into production.

Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end solutions:
    • Convert ambiguous healthcare/operational problems into measurable AI/ML outcomes
    • Select methods, build data/models, deploy services, add observability, and run real-world feedback loops
  • Partner cross-functionally with Product, Engineering, and Clinical leaders to embed data science into workflows such as:
    • claims processing, utilization management, provider network optimization, and risk adjustment
  • Deliver clinical intelligence capabilities, including:
    • autonomous chart review, disease detection, compliance forecasting, quality analytics
  • Build document understanding & analytics models using AI/NLP/LLMs:
    • OCR, NER, and vision models; information extraction and documentation analytics
  • Support quality & payment integrity by:
    • creating models and automated QA to reduce manual review, improve accuracy, and flag documentation anomalies/audit risk
  • Ensure engineering excellence:
    • build internal libraries and reusable components, uphold coding standards, participate in code reviews, and document clearly
  • Own the lifecycle:
    • monitoring, drift detection, alerting, and post-deployment reviews

Requirements

  • 2–5 years delivering production-grade data science or ML software with measurable impact
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals (data structures/algorithms, modular design, API design, documentation)
  • Proficiency in Python and SQL
  • Experience building reusable packages/utilities/CLI tools
  • Applied ML knowledge including tree ensembles/boosting, NLP/LLMs, and/or deep learning; plus experimental design
  • Experience with high-volume, high-dimensional, and unstructured data and a strong data quality mindset
  • Experience with Git workflows, code reviews, and CI/CD
  • Strong data visualization and storytelling skills
  • Ability to thrive in ambiguous, fast-paced environments

Preferred

  • Healthcare domain experience and familiarity with CMS/Medicare Advantage operations
  • Experience with document understanding systems (OCR/NER, LLM pipelines)
  • Experience with NoSQL and performance optimization
  • Contributions to internal frameworks or open-source, and/or published work

Education

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or similar
  • Preferred: MSc/PhD in CS/Engineering/Math/Statistics or related
