Senior DevOps Engineer
Role Overview
Lead the lifecycle and operations of both OpenStack and Rancher-managed Kubernetes platforms at scale. This role bridges two critical infrastructure ecosystems, ensuring scalable, secure, and observable foundations for mission-critical workloads across hybrid cloud environments.
Key Responsibilities
Kubernetes (Rancher RKE2/K3s)
- Design and maintain bare-metal clusters with GitOps-driven automation
- Implement and optimize using Fleet, Argo CD, Terraform, and Helm
- Apply security controls including RBAC, network policies, and compliance guardrails
OpenStack Operations
- Design, automate, and operate multi-tenant clusters across Nova, Neutron, Octavia, Manila, Cinder, Ironic, and Glance
- Ensure tenant isolation, performance optimization, and automated lifecycle management
Cross-Platform Integration
- Enable interoperability between platforms (e.g., Magnum, storage backends, network overlays)
- Implement shared observability stacks (Prometheus, Grafana, Loki/EFK)
SRE Principles
- Apply uniform practices across both stacks for capacity planning, high availability, and resilience
- Lead incident response and continuous improvement initiatives
Required Qualifications
- 7+ years in infrastructure, platform, or SRE engineering roles
- Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA)
- Hands-on production expertise with both OpenStack and Rancher Kubernetes
- Proficiency with Terraform, Ansible, Helm, Argo CD, and scripting (Python/Go/Bash)
- Deep understanding of Linux internals and system performance
- Proven SRE practices in high-stakes, always-on environments
- Strong observability experience (Prometheus, Grafana, Loki/ELK/EFK)
Preferred Qualifications
- Rancher add-ons (Fleet, Longhorn, CIS Scanning) and security hardening (CKS)
- Advanced networking: VXLAN, BGP, NIC offload, NUMA-aware scheduling, SR-IOV, PCI passthrough
- OpenStack Magnum integration and upgrade validation tools (Tempest/Rally)
- Compliance expertise: PCI, FedRAMP, SOC2, FIPS, CIS, NIST standards
- Upstream contributions to OpenStack or Kubernetes projects
Work Location
- Fully Remote for candidates outside 50-mile radius of San Ramon, CA office
- Hybrid (3 days/week on-site M, W, TH) for candidates within 50 miles of San Ramon office
