Role Overview
Principal Product Designer for The New York Times News App, shaping how millions of readers experience journalism on iOS and Android platforms. As a Principal-level individual contributor, you'll lead the creation of intuitive, accessible interfaces that help users discover and engage with content while improving retention and subscriber growth.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify product evolution opportunities alongside senior cross-functional partners, offering design expertise to shape product strategy
- Champion user-centered perspectives during feature implementation and solution design
- Establish practices that accelerate iteration, learning, and knowledge sharing across the function
- Drive culture change to increase trust, diversity, and belonging within the team
- Mentor and guide growth of high-performing individual contributors through collaboration
- Represent team work to leadership while advocating for design craft and process
- Participate in design rituals and hiring for design roles
- Demonstrate commitment to journalistic independence and the Times' mission
Required Qualifications
- 10+ years of user-centered design experience with a portfolio demonstrating design process and finished work
- 10+ years designing digital web, app, or interactive products
- Understanding of iOS and Android best practices
- Proficiency with design and prototyping tools (Figma, Play, Cursor)
- 10+ years facilitating cross-functional alignment through workshops and brainstorms
- 10+ years breaking down complex challenges into trade-off decisions
- 10+ years working with data and qualitative research teams
- 10+ years creating compelling narratives for non-designer audiences
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated expertise with visual design principles, type hierarchies, layout systems, and design systems
- Experience designing large-scale solutions while maintaining user alignment
Work Environment
- Remote position (anywhere in the world)
- Reports to VP of Product Design
- Individual contributor role (not management)
