Overview
Join GovCIO as a Java Developer to support the modernization of Veterans Affairs IT systems. This fully remote position focuses on building secure, scalable backend services and integrating VR&E systems with enterprise VA services.
Key Responsibilities
System & Application Development
- Design, develop, and enhance Java-based applications and APIs supporting VR&E case management
- Build secure, scalable backend services using Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, and microservices patterns
- Support full-stack functionality when required
- Assist in designing and maintaining CI/CD workflows using Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Maven, and Nexus
Systems Integration (Primary Focus)
- Integrate VR&E systems with enterprise VA services (MPI, VA Profile, BGS services, REST/SOAP endpoints)
- Analyze legacy system data flows and build new integration processes
- Create and validate JSON/XML requests for testing web services
- Perform data mapping, transformation, and validation
Cloud & DevOps
- Develop and deploy applications within AWS (EC2, RDS, S3, CloudWatch, SQS/SNS, Lambda)
- Collaborate with DevSecOps engineers to improve build pipelines
- Support containerized deployments
Database & Scripting
- Write PL/SQL, stored procedures, triggers, and views for Oracle/PostgreSQL databases
- Develop scripts using Bash, Curl, or Python
- Analyze data integrity issues and support data migration efforts
Agile Collaboration
- Participate in backlog refinement, sprint planning, daily stand-ups, and reviews
- Provide Tier III troubleshooting support
- Document technical processes and API interaction patterns
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Systems, or related discipline (or commensurate experience)
- 5–8 years of professional software development experience
- 3+ years with Java/JDK, including Spring or Spring Boot
- Experience designing and consuming RESTful APIs
- Experience integrating with external services using JSON/XML
- Hands-on experience with AWS cloud services
- Experience with CI/CD tools (Jenkins, Maven, GitHub, Nexus)
- Experience with relational databases (Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL)
- Strong understanding of Agile/Scrum methodologies
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills
- Ability to obtain a Government Public Trust clearance
Preferred Qualifications
- Understanding of Federal security frameworks (FISMA, NIST 800-53)
- Additional AWS or cloud certifications
