About the role
Position Overview
Support U.S. Customs and Border Protection as a Data Scientist working with little or no supervision. Apply expert knowledge in statistical analysis, complex data mining, and artificial intelligence to transform raw data into actionable insights. Design and implement data-driven solutions with focus on advanced analytical methods, data models, and visualizations.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide consulting on data mining and analysis from multiple data sources
- Design and implement data-driven solutions using advanced analytical methods
- Develop quantitative simulations and models for descriptive and predictive analytics
- Identify trends and problems through complex big data analysis
- Maintain current knowledge of emerging tools and techniques in machine learning and statistical modeling
- Develop data models and visualizations to communicate insights
Required Qualifications
- 6+ years of relevant experience in applied research, big data analytics, statistics, applied mathematics, data science, computer science, or operations research
- 3+ years of direct experience in machine learning
- Advanced degree (Masters or PhD) in Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Data Science, Computer Science, or related quantitative/mathematical discipline (PhD may substitute for up to 3 years of experience)
- Knowledge of data mining methods, databases, data visualization, and machine learning
- Strong ability to communicate analysis techniques and concepts
- Experience developing data-driven solutions, data models, and visualizations
- CBP BI or DHS Suitability clearance adjudicated within the past 4 years
Preferred Skills
- Expertise with Qlik for embedding visualizations
- Experience with Tableau and Power BI
- Familiarity with Databricks or similar cloud-based distributed database technologies
- PySpark and Python proficiency
- Complex SQL query development for ETL
- Analytic techniques: Anomaly detection, Clustering, Time-series analysis (ARIMA)
- NLP implementation: preprocessing, TF-IDF, Named Entity Recognition, LLMs
- AWS environment experience (AWS certifications preferred)
- Knowledge of software-hardware optimization best practices for large datasets
